Screaming Eagle – Legendary Napa Valley Wine
The Screaming Eagle Story:
World-renowned as one of the rarest, most prestigious and expensive wines. Screaming Eagle is legendary.
Jean Phillips, a former real estate agent, bought the 57 acres vineyard in 1986. She planted a mix of varieties, most of which was sold to various Napa wineries. With all white varieties but for 1-acre and approximately 80 vines of Cabernet Sauvignon, Philips sought the opinions of wine industry friends on the commercial potential of her estate. She then before hired Richard Peterson as a consultant. Subsequently she met Peterson’s daughter, Heidi Peterson Barrett, who became her winemaker.
The release of the 1992 vintage, through a combination of very low production numbers and highly positive reviews, resulted in Screaming Eagle becoming one of the most celebrated and expensive wines in the Napa Valley. In 2006 the estate was sold to Stan Kroenke. The vineyard area extends 48 acres and is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The annual production ranges from 400 to 600 cases a year.
At the 2000 Auction Napa Valley, a 6-litre Imperial bottle of 1992 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon sold for $500,000.
Screaming Eagle, The Flight – 2016, Napa Valley
Tasting Notes:
The Flight is composed roughly of two-thirds Merlot with 5% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon. The medium to deep colored wine opens with bold, expressive notions of wild blueberries, warm plums and boysenberries with touches of black raspberries, spice cake, violets, dark chocolate and potpourri. It has just a a hint of menthol. Full-bodied, rich, spicy and jam-packed with energy, it has beautifully plush tannins texturing the multilayered blue and black fruits, delivering a very long, perfumed finish. – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
